Newly certified dispatcher school graduates will find a healthy job market. However, don’t expect to be hired immediately by one of the major airlines. Major airlines are looking for a minimum of 5- years experience with a smaller carrier first. Dispatch positions are seen as senior management and require the knowledge and experience to handle the responsibility of the safety and economics of their flights. Individuals already employed by an airline with many years of airline experience may find it easier to be hired by one of the majors.
Aircraft dispatcher’s salaries vary from airline to airline. Senior dispatchers with major airlines easily earn in excess of $100,000 per year and some in excess of $150,000. Entry level positions with smaller carriers may start at closer to $30,000 per year. Beginning dispatchers should expect to work shifts outside the normal 8:00-5:00 shift including holidays where applicable.
